Motor Racing Legends is pleased to announce an exciting new grid for the 2020 season for Group 2 and Group 1 Touring Cars from 1966 to 1969 (Period G1).
This new grid will be a development of the existing U2TC series and will run to the same eligibility rules. U2TC will very much continue in its current format and will henceforth run with this new grid – to be known as the Sixties Touring Car Challenge with U2TC.
The new series opens the door to Mk 2 Lotus Cortinas, BMW 2002s, Alfa Romeo GTA variants, early Mk 1 Ford Escorts, Mk 2 Minis, Lancia Fulvias and a host of other small-engined cars that have hitherto been poorly served. The existing two litre capacity limit, tyre regs and four-cylinder, normally-aspirated, engine rules of U2TC will apply. Group 5 cars will not be accepted, but remain fully eligible for the separate Historic Touring Car Challenge grid.
There are five rounds planned in 2020, including a welcome return to the Silverstone Classic in July and to the Spa Six Hours in September. The Donington Historic Festival in May; Thruxton Historic in June and the Algarve Classic Festival in October will also feature. With the exception of Silverstone Classic, each round will consist of two 40-minute races. The Silverstone Classic round will be the traditional 50-minute race.
We have also listened to the drivers. The two grids will feature dedicated podiums and separate starts wherever possible. At Donington, Thruxton, Silverstone and the Algarve – the Sixties Touring Car Challenge with U2TC will feature stand-alone races. At the Spa Six Hours the grid will be combined with the Historic Touring Car Challenge in order to make a Spa grid work both numerically and financially. And henceforth the results of all our double-header rounds will now be combined to give an overall result for the meeting, rather than just presenting awards based on results of race 2 each time.
On the technical side, Motor Racing Legends are also pleased to confirm that cars running specified electronic ignition will now be permitted in the Sixties Touring Car Challenge with U2TC. Full Technical Regulations will be published immediately in the New Year.
I sincerely hope you will come and join the new series in either a U2TC eligible pre-’66 car, or in a Period G1 Touring Car for the Sixties Touring Car Challenge.
The Sixties Touring Car Challenge with U2TC will feature at all five Motor Racing Legends events in 2020:
Donington Historic Festival: May 1 – 3
Thruxton Historic: June 6 – 7
Silverstone Classic: July 31, August 1 – 2
Spa Six Hours: September 25 – 27
Algarve Historic Festival: October 23 -25
