Twenty-five pre-War sports cars took to the grid for the first Motor Racing Pre-War Sports Car race of 2008, at the VSCC SeeRed meeting at Donington on 1st June. Despite the damp conditions, the competitors drove with their customary verve, the nimble Frazer Nash SuperSports of Gillett and Myers starting from pole and fighting throughout the one-hour race to hold off the attentions of the thundering Talbot AV105 of Burnett/Sadler.
Helped, perhaps, by the slippery conditions, David kept Goliath at bay and the Frazer Nash built up a lead of some 27 seconds by the time the chequered flag fell. The Baldwin/Baldwin Aston Martin Le Mans came third and other class-winners included John Polson in his Talbot 105 Sports, and the Aston Martin Speed Model of Lake and Varley.
Worthy of mention is the driving skill of Martin Overington who got his Blower Bentley really singing, and delighted spectators by sliding this impressive and hugely valuable machine through the chicane on full opposite lock – to finish 11th overall.
The next round of the Motor Racing Legends Pre-War Sports Cars Series is at the Silverstone Classic, July 25-27.
