Sir Stirling Moss was among the star guests at the Official Media Launch of the Silverstone Classic on 30th April, giving passenger rides in the famous 1952 Jaguar C-type which, in period, Stirling drove to repeated victories. Most notable among these was his 1952 win at Reims – the very first competition success for a disc-braked car. As a historic racer, the C-type took part in Motor Racing Legends’ very first ‘Le Mans Legend’ race, in 2001.
Motor Racing Legends is running three of the top races at this year’s Silverstone Classic – the BRDC 500 for pre-War sports cars; the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy for pre-1956 sports-racers, and the BRDC Historic Sportscars for racers built before the end of December 1959.
Another famous face at April’s Media Launch was Murray Walker – a highly appropriate guest, since this year’s event is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first Grand Prix held at Silverstone. While Murray was at that first Silverstone GP in 1948, it wasn’t until the following year that he started his long history of Grand Prix commentating.
“The Silverstone Classic is a very special event,” said Murray, “with the period it is going to cover and the cars that are going to race here. Silverstone is unique, it is one of the finest racing circuits in the world and to be able to put on so many cars, bring together so many historic people and give the public access to them is a brilliant achievement.”
The 2008 Silverstone Classic runs from July 25th to 27th.
